Product review: Kraft peanut butter flavours

Full disclosure: I love peanut butter. It is definitely a “non-negotiable food” i.e. one that I am not willing to give up under any circumstances. So when I heard from my soon-to-be sister in law that Kraft had new flavoured peanut butter varieties, I was obviously interested in trying them. Currently, there are four flavours available: Honey, Banana Granola Peanut, Cinnamon Granola Raisin and Cranberry Peanut. All are available in a 500g jar selling for $3. I don't like the idea of sweetened dried fruit and other forms of sugar being added to peanut butter in an attempt to make it more appealing. By taking a food that naturally has no added sugar and then adding various form of sugar to it, Kraft is contributing to our already excessive daily added sugar consumption. Canadians consume on average, 23 teaspoons or 92g of added sugar per day from packaged and prepared foods which is equivalent to 368 calories. To put that into perspective, the American Heart Association recommends no more than 6 teaspoons or 96 calories of added sugar per day for woman and 9 teaspoons or 144 calories per day for men. Excess added sugar consumption can lead to weight gain, tooth decay and high triglycerides, which can increase your risk for heart disease. If you want to have fruit with your peanut butter, use fresh fruit such as sliced banana or apple. Like I've said time and time again, nothing replaces the real thing when it comes to fruits and vegetables.

So what’s the best type of peanut butter to choose? The answer is natural peanut butter which contains no added sugar and is also sodium-free. Remember that the oil separation is natural and is fixed by simply mixing the product prior to use. It’s also the most flavourful varieties of peanut butter out there, in my opinion.
