Cocktails & Calories: Planning Ahead for Holiday Merriment

As we slide into the festive season, it’s helpful to have a good understanding of just how many calories are in the holiday cocktails you're almost sure to encounter. Calories from liquids can be sneaky. For one thing, they don’t feel quite the same as calories from food. Even after a drink or two, we’re likely to eat just as much as we would have if we hadn’t had the drinks at all. Adding to this is the fact that alcohol lowers our inhibitions and may even increase hunger.

As with many things, it helps to have a plan. Consider what is the least amount you would need to truly enjoy yourself (and be honest with yourself about that). Think about how many holiday parties you will likely attend. Maybe having a drink at each one is in order. Or, maybe there are one or two where sparkling water will do. A few things worth considering as you decide:

  • One standard alcoholic drink is equivalent to 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer, or 1.5 ounces of spirits.
  • One pint beer provides 190 calories, bottled beer provides 150 calories, a 5-oz glass of wine provides 125 calories, and shot of liquor provides 96 calories. Mixed drinks often contain more.
  • It’s a good idea to limit consumption to one drink per hour – this is roughly the amount of time it takes to metabolize one alcoholic beverage.

With your plan in place, decide to enjoy the beverages you love most, and skip the rest.
