There seems to be a common misconception about the nutrition value of canned and frozen vegetables. Perhaps because they tend to be more cost effective, the public perceives them as less nutritious. In actual fact, some of these items may provide just as many vitamins and nutrients as the fresh stuff!
𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐯𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬: Convenient and time saving. Although they may not pack as much fibre as the crisp and fresh versions, they still provide a lower calorie option with significant amounts of nutrients (ex. 1 serving of canned carrots contains 45% of your daily vitamin A)! The one thing that needs to be considered here is the sodium content. Make sure you thoroughly rinse vegetables that come from the can to eliminate the added salt that is used as a preservative.
𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐳𝐞𝐧 𝐯𝐞𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞𝐬: Typically picked at the peak level of ripeness and then flash frozen and distributed, these veggies are a great choice! You can purchase a large bag of a variety of items and keep them in the freezer to preserve them for much longer than the fresh versions. Normally they come pre-chopped so the prep work is minimal = added bonus!
During the months when particular produce is out of season and has to be transported far distances, frozen or canned goods may be the better choice for you! In general, depending on your schedule, budget, cooking skills and taste preferences, choose the type of vegetable that fits best into your lifestyle.
