The Best Diet of 2019?

Every year, the US News and World Report comes out with a list of the best diets to follow for the upcoming year. These rankings are based on several factors such as impact on weight loss, heart health and diabetes and is sure to consider a variety of diets, not forgetting the newly popular ones such as paleo and ketogenic. Although the diets that came out on top (Mediterranean and DASH diet) were those that many health professionals would agree with and recommend, it is important to also keep the individual in mind.

What do the winning diets look like? The Mediterranean diet has a focus on plant-based foods such as legumes, fruits and vegetables, plus lots of fish, whole grains and olive oil. The DASH diet has a focus on lowering blood pressure by limiting sodium intake with foods such as fruits and vegetables, beans, nuts, whole grains, and low-fat dairy.

While these both sound very promising in promoting improved health, choosing the right diet isn’t just knowing which one is voted “best”. In order to find the most appropriate eating routine for YOU, your preferences, dietary needs, economic status, location and cooking ability (to name a few) must be taken into consideration.

Is fish too slimy for you? Do you prefer certain fruits and vegetables over others? Are you allergic to nuts? Keeping the foundations of the Mediterranean and DASH diets in mind, feel free to modify them in a way that fits your lifestyle and can be sustained. The “best” diet for you is the one that promotes improved health, makes you feel energized, and can be maintained for the rest of your life.
