Swap Out the (Added) Sugar!

Sugar is naturally found in many food items such as fruit, dairy and grains like bread and pasta. But manufacturers are adding sugar to products to increase the flavour and texture so that they appeal more to the consumer. Unfortunately, these large amounts of added sugar can amount to having quite a negative impact on our health. Increasing our risk of developing diseases such as type II diabetes, in addition to leaving our bodies low in energy following the inevitable sugar crash, these sweet treats do not provide our bodies with much benefit. So how can we get away from the high sugar foods and opt for something that will provide more nutrients? Try out some of these swaps!

Instead of: Fruit flavoured yogurt or drinkable yogurt

Try: Plain yogurt with added fresh/frozen fruit

Instead of: Frosted Flakes, Honey Nut Cheerios, Lucky Charms

Try: Original Cheerios, Corn Flakes, homemade oatmeal

Instead of: Juice or pop

Try: Water, milk, sugar free juice

Instead of: Store bought muffins, cookies, granola bars

Try: Homemade baked goods (reduce sugar amount in the recipe by 1/3 and it will still taste great!)
